20 Years NEMC Experience
experience over twenty years is a report which analyses
activities of the Council over the past twenty years
(1983 – 2003); its achievements, challenges and how it
has evolved to the present day NEMC
This report analyses NEMC activities over the past
twenty years (1983 – 2003); its achievements, challenges
and how it has evolved to the present day NEMC. There
has been a number of achievements which can be
summarised in institutional growth in terms of staff and
capacity to undertake its functions, increased
environmental awareness in the country, facilitating
sectoral activities by either working in collaboration
or initiating programmes and projects and facilitating
evolution of other environmental management institutions
and organizations as well as spearheading and
implementing various Government programmes geared
towards improved environmental quality and sustainable
development of our country.
Furthermore, the report highlights major achievements
and challenges which the Council faced over the period,
facilities available within the Council, publications
produced and experience and capacity built.
NEMC experience over twenty years has shown that
environmental management functions which are cross
cutting among sectors need a stronger institutions for
regulating and oversee environmental management which is
performed by a number of sectors. Likewise there are
some of environmental issues which can’t be easily
addressed by one sector.
