National Environmental
Education and Communication Strategy
The National Environmental Education and
Communication Strategy (NEECS) is aimed at complementing
the implementation of several national policies,
strategies and international commitments and opening up
avenues for EE practitioners throughout the country to
share experiences. It has been positioned to support the
implementation of the MKUKUTA communication strategy in
sharing knowledge and experiences on poverty-environment
linkages.
Environmental Education (EE) has a long
history in Tanzania. In 1967, when the Arusha
declaration was pronounced by the father of the national
the late Mwalimu J.K.Nyerere it had a strong bias on
education for self reliance. It had a motive of
education for production, schools became centres of
agriculture production and other artisanal skills with
less emphasis on conservation aspects of resources used.
It prepared school leavers for livelihood on resource
utilization. In
Tanzania, EE in its broad sense has been carried out for
many years through sector-oriented agriculture, forestry
or community development outreach or extension
programmes.
